Temporary Protection That Peels Away When the Job Is Done

Strippable coatings provide a temporary protective barrier that helps shield surfaces from paint, overspray, chemicals, abrasion, contamination, and other manufacturing processes—then removes when protection is no longer needed.

General Chemical Corp. develops and manufactures strippable coating solutions for industrial, manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, finishing, and maintenance applications.

Whether you need to protect a paint booth wall from overspray, shield equipment during production, protect tooling or fixtures, or create a temporary barrier against contamination, GCC can help you select the right strippable coating for the job.

What Is a Strippable Coating?

A strippable coating is a temporary protective coating designed to be applied to a surface, provide protection during a process or period of use, and then be removed—typically by peeling, lifting, or stripping the coating away.

Unlike permanent paints and coatings, strippable coatings are designed around temporary surface protection and controlled removal.

The right coating can help:

  • Protect surfaces from paint and overspray
  • Reduce cleanup and maintenance
  • Protect equipment and fixtures during manufacturing
  • Shield surfaces from contamination
  • Protect against abrasion and handling damage
  • Create temporary chemical or process barriers
  • Extend the usable life of equipment and surfaces
  • Reduce labor associated with masking and cleanup

The Strippable Coating Experts

Protection Is More Than a Coating. It's a Process.

Choosing a strippable coating isn't simply a matter of selecting a product from a catalog.

Performance depends on the surface being protected, what the coating must withstand, how it will be applied, how long it will remain in place, and how it needs to be removed.

That's why GCC approaches strippable coatings as a surface-protection system.

Our technical team can help evaluate:

Substrate
Metal, steel, aluminum, painted surfaces, concrete, plastics, composites, and other substrates.

Exposure
Paint overspray, chemicals, solvents, abrasion, moisture, heat, contamination, and manufacturing processes.

Application
Spray, brush, roller, or other application methods depending on the product.

Service Life
Short-term protection, production-cycle protection, or longer-term temporary protection.

Removal
Peelability, stripping characteristics, residue, and the condition of the protected surface after removal.

Process Requirements
Your specific production environment, application equipment, production volume, and maintenance requirements.

How Do Strippable Coatings Work?

  1. Apply- The coating is applied directly to the surface that needs protection.
  2. Cure- The coating forms a continuous protective film or barrier.
  3. Protect- The cured coating protects the underlying surface during the required process or exposure.
  4. Remove- When protection is no longer required, the coating is removed from the surface. The underlying surface is left ready for its next process, depending on the coating, substrate, and application conditions.

How to Choose a Strippable Coating

There is no single "best" strippable coating for every application.

The correct product depends on the combination of substrate + exposure + application + service life + removal requirements.
